Calcium is one of the most important nutrients to include in your diet, be it in the form of dairy products, leafy greens or via supplements. Calcium is vital for good bone health and is strongly linked to the prevention of bone conditions such as osteoporosis. However, there’s more to this mineral than you might think so we’ve put together three quick facts about calcium that may surprise you.
It’s possible to have too much calcium.
Rather than extra calcium adding to good health, it may make your body work harder to process the excess.1 Most people only need 1,000 to 1,300mg of calcium per day so if you’re consuming more than 2,000mg in a day, it’s likely your kidneys will be on overdrive to eradicate the excess that your body simply does not need.
Calcium doesn’t only come from dairy products.
Many people are surprised to learn that even if you don’t like the taste of milk or yoghurt, there are still plenty of ways to include calcium in your diet. Leafy greens such as kale and vegetables like broccoli are rich in calcium. Half a cup of raw broccoli, for example, contains about 21mg of calcium. Fish sources often also have high calcium levels, such as salmon, which offers about 180mg of calcium in a 1/3 cup serving2?.
Calcium is used in the body for more than just healthy bones and teeth.
While it’s only a small percentage, some of the body’s calcium is used for muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signalling and hormonal secretion. Between the support of these functions and the high levels found in teeth and bones, this makes the mineral the most abundant in the body.
